Probagating from rhizome section

Post by iain »

I placed a young rhizome of Hibanobambusa tranquillans 'Shiroshima' in a tray and kept it in the house. It was quite exciting to find the ivory tip of a tiny culm poking through the soil five weeks on. Now I am going to have to look after the thing. I wonder, as I don't have a greenhouse to overwinter it in, should I place the tray outside? I know there will be a few here who have much experience with this. As a novice it was pretty difficult to avoid the temptation to water.

I bought the same bamboo on e bay as a rhizome section and just potted in up and left it out side by the end of the year it was a very small plant but put it in the ground ,its has done well this year but my winters only go to -5c so might be different for you up north

Hi Deane, thanks for your input. Your (generally) warm summers make a great difference. As I started the plant late (early spring being optimum) I will give it the benefit of the warmth of the house. And see how it goes.
