Shoots 2017 - potted bamboo

Post by needmore »

Starting to see shoots emerging from multiple genus , thus far F robusta, H asper, Chim pallens, Chusquea Gib Cooperii, Indo hamadae, Indo longiaritus. If it stops raining here and the sun gets a chance things will probably explode.

I'm going to experiment this year by mixing an intense batch of multiple fertilizers and dumping it on thick on the surface of the pots today. Things are a tad yellow'ish and I like to feed & thin out small culms just ahead of shoot initiation.

Here is one I have decided to try inside as it is last surviving seedling of P Primotina, from seeds a forum member sent me a few years ago.

I was leaving it out on porch and bringing it in when temps were to go below 20*F, but after a close call, and it not liking the transitions, I decided to try to overwinter in my office, which I keep fairly cool, and a grow light.

Largest of new shoots is almost 1/2 diameter. They look a lot like bissetti to me, except for the one light green/yellow shoot, hope that does something interesting.

Last time I had a shoot like that light one was in a pot of P flexiosa, from a division right after it went to seed and mostly died off. In that case, the bright yellow shoot did not survive.

I mixed planting soil, chicken manure, steer manure, ironite, milorganite and some leftover granular bulb food up in a wheelbarrow. Removed all loose soil at the top of each pot and put down the mix an inch deep or so solid across the top, topped off with the 'old' soil I had removed.

Be interesting to see what happens.

I think it's just because it hasn't seen the light. Some shoots appear completely white (my variegated Luteosulcata), some bright red (Moso) and some glowing yellow (Aurea, Pseudosasa japonica,...). It gets green pigments when it gets exposed to light in a week or two. It would be interesting if it remains yellow and perhaps start growing as an albino. Some trees do that and can get resources from the green part of the plant.

True, but I've never tried it indoors, and don't intend to. My cats will probably go raccoon on it and dig up my plants. :)

That's no way to treat my new Tonkin cane! The rufa you gave me has so many shoots I could not being to count them, about 6 inches tall thus far. Some also on the Y anceps. Sasa, Indos, Pleioblastus ground covers all shooting. Down to 33F this AM.

Well then it is just a delayed form of watering and that is fine.

Dependable.....

For what it's worth my shoots of primotina look like yours. It's been outside this winter in a pot and so far so good. Lowest temp was 14f. Lots of prolonged cold and quite a few nights below freezing. I didn't actually even think to pull it into the greenhouse. Thank goodness it's alive!! Kwang is right next to it and looks great too. Both plants are small still.

Shoot report...

Moso goldstripe has resumed shooting it's in the greenhouse though.
