phyll. vivax aureocaulis new culm purplish tint

Post by BooKing »

Hello all:

A photo of a new culm on my vivax aureocaulis is in the photo section. The culm has a purplish tint on the yellow culm. Anyone know if this is normal? I don't remember the new culms in spring having this.
Any info would be gladly appreciated-just check out the picture gallery.

thank you

Koniferkid

p.s. thanks Mike for posting the picture..[what can I say, I am inept]...

magenta culm

Post by needmore »

Konnifer, the Yellow Culm bamboos often have a magenta phase. It will eventually fade to yellow.

Yellow to Red

Post by Steve in France »

I watched all the different yellow/gold Ph Bamboos here develope red colour last Spring , the more sun the darker the colour. In one of the Bamboo books it says yellow Ph aureosulcata types go red in sun but does not say they all do it, so I had doubts my ph vivax was a true plant until I realized they all do it, in truth my spectabilis gained the most colour and is still not totally yellow yet. Where the culm turns red it is said to have a richer yellow after it changes to mature culm colour. I'm hoping to have Ph aureosulcata "Lama Temple" next year and lok forward to see just how red then yellow/gold they get.

Red Highlights on Yellow Bamboos

Post by Eric Layton »

Koniferkid,
It is a normal trait, my Ph. aureosulcata aureocaulis does the same thing. It is only on first year culms though, after that they stay yellow. Springtime is the most intense and this year I got another blush this fall. Here is an older picture showing the redish change. I also posted this on the GW forum. Eric
