Hi fellow bamboo enthusiasts. I just wanted to put it out there and say that it looks like some shoots on my P. aureosalcutta aureocaulis look like harbin inversa. Green with yellow sulcus. Now I'm not really to sure yet if the shoots will change back to the normal color, it's really awesome looking though. There are 4 green shoots that came up really early this spring and now the newly emerging ones are a normal vibrant yellow. It's actually a great contrast 8). Has anyone had similar circumstances with this strain? I know the Vivax aureocaulis can change / revert.

Do you mean normal Yellow Groove (green with yellow sulcus)? Harbin Inversa is mostly yellow with lots of thin green stripes.

In any case, I haven't seen my 'Aureocaulis' revert. How old is your planting? Was it a field-dug division? Any chance there was actually a Yellow Groove rhizome in there?

The planting is only in its second shooting season. It was a 5 gallon plant that was really pot bound with a good rhizome structure. Oops Lol and yes I ment yellow groove not harbin inversa. I wouldn't say that there was a mixup of rhizome in the pot since last year all the shoots were normal. But hey you really never know what natures up to all the time I guess. Maybe they were whip shoots. Did yours whip shoots turn back to yellow? It's a good possibility that these were whip shoots because the size is actually a little smaller then those of the standard color that's shooting now.
OTOH great contrast and very convenient because I have never purchased the yellow groove yet. So yeah, one more for my soon to be out of control collection.

The whip shoots didn't become yellow, but they did lighten a bit. As you said, it's a nice contrast.

I was just out having a look at the shoots this year and I noticed that the old culms are not rough like sand paper. Shouldn't all the aureosalcutta culms be rough to the touch? Here's a pic of the color change also.

Don't believe that the green ones are whip shoots they look nothing like them really, you either have a piece of a 2nd rhizome in the pot as suggested or it did revert as you suggested. I have the same thing with a spectabilis patch, classic yellow groove also comes up in it and my assumption has been that the vendor was sloppy and I obtained both originally but have never been certain.

Cut the green culms and if they are rhizome leftover, they should die after a while.

I think that it's actually a re-vert of some sort, well I kind of hope so actually because its seems rare. The vendor I bought it from had it for 2 years with only the aureocaulis as shoots coming from the pot it was in. It seems to me that there are two culms close together that are from the same rhizome. I really should move some dirt away to see but ill wait till the shootings really underway so not to disturb any buds. I don't have a yellow groove yet either so its kind of cool....I guess. Did you keep your yellow groove going or cut it back? Another question I brought up earlier is that shouldn't the culm be rough to touch? Here's a closer look at the two culms close together.

If you're asking me, mine continues to produces both types, the grove is skinny and neglected looking otherwise I think it would be an attractive mix to have so I've left it alone. The culms should be rough on the 'up' but not on the 'down' rub.
