DEEEP Freeze

Post by boonut »

Could get down to 23 here... with possible sleet and snow. Wind chill in the teens. We only had 16 days to get out of range of freezing temps. No freezes this year so far.

Lots of new bamboo in the ground. Dendrocalamus Maroochy was doing great... two big boo in the ground. We will have to wait and see. Not enough time or energy to cover all the tropicals at the farm.

Hope everyone stays safe during this deep freeze.

Forecast this week is 20°F tonight (windchill of 5°F), 22°F tomorrow, 23°F Thurs, 23°F Friday. Saturday starts the warming trend.

There is going to be much death at my farm.

Same here three nights in the low twentys one barely freezing in the forcast. The front this morning blew a wall on my green house got it patched back up. Only protecting my Wammin ot he in ground Boo. Got several layers of clothe and plastic on it and a work light inside. Really hope that will do the trick as it put 3" culms up after being burnt to the ground last year. Am hoping for 4" and more compression nexxt summer.
Got colder last winter but only one hard freeze night. Fingers are crossed.

Glad I do not have to work Friday as there is snow in the forcast and they expect it to stick. Us coastal Texans do not know how to drive on snow. Kinda like to put a camera by a busy intersection to capture the fun watching the hardcore that think they can drive in anything. Tow trucks will be busy.

It seems that global warming is freezing Texas :)

I really feel for all you tropical guys out there :( Isn't it so odd that Houston is forecasted for 20 degrees, yet my low so far this year in zone 7b has been 18 and our forecast this week bottoms out in the mid 20's. Strange weather, indeed! I remember before winter came those in the know were saying we would have a mild winter here, and though we had temps in the teens a month earlier than usual our absolute lows have been extraordinarily mild, with just a few weeks of strong frost possibility left.

It seems this would have been the year for me to plant some bambusa multiplex to get established. Supposedly they do well in my zone if they can get well established for a couple of years before a severe winter hits.

Good luck to you all; I can only imagine how I would feel with my temperate bamboos if my area were forecasted to get to -5f this week :(

Matthew

Advocates of global warming claim it causes temperature extremes both hot & cold.

As to Houston weather, doesn't look all that odd, just maybe not that frequent. Seems they average 20 days per year of freezing weather. They set a record of 5 degrees F back in 1930. Looks like Houston is in my twilight zone 9a. Good luck to the tropical growers there.

Interesting info, I never would've thought some of those figures were even possible there! Our zone rating here is true most years as far as the absolute yearly minimum. I can't remember the last time it got below 5f (our minimum temp according to our zone designation) here.

Yeah, the longer the time period you measure the temperature, the greater the extremes. the book Palms Won't Grow Here had a discussion of this citing some scary record lows in areas we consider tropical.

As I understand it, one effect of Global Warming is to raise the average amount of moisture the atmosphere can hold. So the atmosphere can either suck up or release more moisture. This results in more intense droughts and percipitation. Snow counts as percipitation. Global Warming also adds more energy to the atmosphere which results in more weather extremes.

Instead of looking at the last 120 years, how about looking at the last 20 years. Here are the all time record lows for January (taken from Weather.com):

Day Record Low (year)
1 25°F (1979)
2 16°F (1979)
3 19°F (1979)
4 22°F (1959)
5 25°F (1972)
6 25°F (1970)
7 19°F (1970)
8 21°F (1976)
9 22°F (1962)
10 17°F (1962)
11 15°F (1982)
12 17°F (1962)
13 23°F (1963)
14 19°F (1982)
15 25°F (1979)
16 27°F (1972)
17 23°F (1965)
18 22°F (1948)
19 19°F (1943)
20 19°F (1989)
21 20°F (1985)
22 25°F (1954)
23 24°F (1963)
24 17°F (1963)
25 24°F (1963)
26 26°F (1943)
27 25°F (1966)
28 26°F (1948)
29 25°F (1951)
30 12°F (1949)
31 10°F (1949)

Not a single one of them has been set in the last 20 years. Also notice that most of the record lows are temps in the mid-20's. The weather we are currently having is not normal for recent years. We may get some days of freezing each year, but most of the time it is in the 28°-32° range, not the 20°-22° range.

Reference to the burnt leaves. The first night of this event has left leaf burn on most of my Boo. Even some of the Multiplex have some. It only got to 23F but very dry. Only clumpers not showing burn are my Textilis, one I call "Outlaw" , Kanapaha, Gracilis and Glabra. Everything else shows burn.

Reference to burnt leaves...2...definate north to south gradiant. Wind was a major factor in the damage.
