Good to know that my Pl. shibuyanus 'Tsuboi' is in fact Pl. shibuyanus 'Tsuboi'.

I have found flowers on at least half the culms from last year and on most of the shoots. But more flowers emerge each day and I expect the rest of the culms and shoots to flower. (Started out with just flowers on the shoots from one rhizome.)

I can't think of what could have stressed it that wasn't done to any of the other bamboos. :?

I've had the nagging feeling that there was something 'off' about my tsuboi plant for a while, but haven't been able to pinpoint what, exactly. Would imminent flowering help explain its over-all malaise, how mine's behaved? Its been lack-luster, divisions are reluctant, and so far this year, not a hint of a new shoot. Not a hint of flowering yet, either, though. Its leafing out at the moment, but a peripheral patch of it up and died so suddenly, it happened nearly over-night. Nothing I do for it seems to perk it up, but it keeps just sitting there, in stasis, giving no hint why it seems torpid.

I think that what you are seeing is just that it has not been warm enough to wake up the pleos yet... none of mine in pots or in the ground are doing anything.... Patience, grasshopper, Patience

At this point I would trust the feeling. I'd only had my 'Tsuboi' for a year, so I probably wouldn't tell the difference between malaise and first year sleeping/creeping. It did seem to have put out runners in all directions, so once it did start shooting there were lots of real small flower topped shoots.

Here the 'Tsuboi' was one of the first few bamboos to leaf out.

Gene, have you been engaging in a "catch and release" program? NO GOPHERS HERE!!!!! I've seen your pain, man~! I don't want to join you. Actually, gophers were my first thought, and after a heart-stopping moment, I discovered the dead patch is still very firmly attached to the ground. Maybe next weekend I'll dig it up and look closer. My other pleios are being sluggish to get shooting, too, so you're probably right on the temps.

I guess I'll have to wait for shooting to see what happens. Mine has been in the ground three years. Definitely something off with it.

So am I.

Actually, I have some questions about that bad boy, but maybe I'd better start a new thread for it.

I've been checking my Plei. fortunei quite regularly, and some of the first shoots (the short ones, now buried in the plant) have ripe seeds. When I touched them they fell off. Lost a couple seeds that way, but got about 5 seeds.

A couple have germinated already, after maybe 5 days. :D

The number of seeds that plumped up and ripened is pretty small compared to the number of seeds in the flower. Is bamboo wind-pollinated?

I'll keep monitoring the plant and collecting seed as I find it.

yes, it is wind polinated. I have see the same with my nitida that is flowering- very few seeds for the size of the flower cluster...

So what should the all-green seedlings of Pleio. fortunei be called? There's nothing in the plants list for this.

Also, how quickly after flowering does a plant decline? My fortunei seems just fine, and is putting out rhizomes and a few whipshoots. Will it flower for more than one year? Will next year be the first indication that it's declined (if it has)?

The flowering that my Pl. fortunei went through last year continues this year. The plant spread quite a bit last year and is sending up lots of shoots, so it's not dead yet. It covered about a 1' diameter circle last year, and this year it's about 3' diameter, or maybe 4' x 2' oval.

I'm just glad to see that it's not dead yet. :D

Just an update on my fortunei: no sign of flowers this year, and the patch is going strong! (There were a few flowers last year, but less than the previous year). Am I out of danger with this one? It seems so to me. :D

Another update: My fortunei patch is quite thick and healthy, but I did notice a few flowers this year. Certainly isn't losing vigor. (Didn't see any flowers last year.)
