Newbie question

Post by Bo »

Is it realistic to think that I can control P. Aurea with an open trench and rhizome pruning? Is P. Aurea harder to control than other phyllostachys?
I am in zone 7b.

I grow a number of different Phyllostachys sp., and I have found that Ph. aurea is a more aggressive runner than most.

Just move to Iowa and your aurea will be a limping dead rat. Or so mine seems.

I started 3 years ago with a couple of small plants and it has shot up over 30 feet away, no telling how far the rhizomes have gone!

I was at the grove cleanup in Puyallup, Wa last week and Aurea is the slowest spreading of the seven species that they have planted. The plots were planted five years ago and the Aurea is just now filling in between the plants that were planted 5 feet apart.

The climate in that area is warm (Zone 8) and damp in the winter and cool in the Summer. ( If anyone from Western Washington does not think they have cool 8) summers they are welcome to cross the mountains and checkout warm weather :violent3: )

Thanks everyone for your responses. I guess I will go ahead with the
Aurea since I can get all that i need for free and it seems perfect for the situation if I can keep it under control. Maybe I'll have to root prune three times a year instead of two. Hopefully its not smart enough to dive under my trenches :D .
