I had a mouse snap trap that I used for my phyllostachys nuda for the month of January. Caught
3 voles
3 mice

The rodents know the legend surrounding nuda as the cold-hardiest bamboo around, so they are out to get it :!:

We're at the half-way point of winter, YAY! Looking back over the first half, the lowest temperature recorded on the campus weather station was 7 F. Essentially, we have had winter weather more typical of of Zone 7b, rather than 5b/6a! I'm going to be very disappointed if I don't have 20+ foot culms this spring!

I keep watching for it, but I'm not sure what it means when the Woodchuck sees his shadow with an iPod.

Can't wait for it myself. most of my boo is looking a bit sad but spring should perk them up. Lance i went to your site and i have to say....wow...you must have spent your whole tax refund on that spring order....good luck with your plantings. this will be my second spring for most of mine. I am very curious how they shoot. Mulched some heavy too. i am anxious to see how that makes a difference.

Hey Iowa, I live near foxd and it is always a few degrees colder at my place than his (we've been to 3F a couple of nights) so if we get that cold spell you wished on him, there goes the Viridis - catch my drift.....

lol,,
Just seems too mild this year.
Even with -10F the low where I'm at.
A lot of times the winter low can occur in February, at least around here.

above url lists coldest temps and month occured(note: July is not listed)
I don't wish cold anywhere, In winter
Nor do I wish extreme heat, when summer arrives.

Jake, Costa Rica
Yes, I'm wondering like Mike if your serious. Explain this costa rica quest in more detail. Is it a job placement, retirement, dream?

Some of those latin america countries have cheap land compared to parts in the U.S.A. I could buy a ranch down in belize for 1/3 the cost iowa farm land sales for. But my parents wouldn't co-sponser it. Also, there are no fer-de-lance in Iowa.
lol..add to that huge bushmasters ,killer bees, army ants and quite a few other deadly snakes...ive been all over central america, thou costa rica is the best country if one going to live there..

lkz5ia wrote:Yeah, I have much work ahead. I try to find microclimates for my tender boo that I'm buying. With all the open country around here I'm locating most of my bamboo in sheltered woodland locations. A lot of the areas consist of dead elm, dying elm, and young elm that will die in the future. So I'm clearing those areas and trying to grow some iowaboo.
One of those spots will have phyllostachys propinqua'bejing'. The other spot will also be a phyllostachys. The main section I have fun on is 23 wooded acres.
I outlined our farm on this thread (The red dots showed where I planted my bamboo) http://bambooweb.info/bb/viewtopic.php?t=80, which is the same as my tinyurl below my name. The tinyurl aerial photo can be zoomed in and out, and it shows where the buildings are, ponds, trees, pasture, cropland, ect.
hi lance

you got your work cut out i see...when you get down the road P.p.bejing big enough id love to work out something for a plant.....?

Why didn't you stay :?: 8)

I wouldn't mind a climate like norfolk island. I'm sure the place has to be great, nearly everyone has a norfolk island pine in their homes in amarika.
