Cold damage so far

rained 0.7" yesterday. Alot of the sad-looking ones partially rehydrated. If a conifer looked that sad, they couldn't do magical tricks like that.

Not much damage so far. The snow really took the bamboo to the ground, but it bounced back for the most part. Here's 4 pics from a few weeks back

Phil, I see room for LOTS of bamboo there. Don't just dig out those big Bissetii and take 'em out for a drive on Interstate 80, transplant them into that space in between the Henon & Rubro, but back about 25 feet. That house across the street will just disappear - except briefly during the snowy spells.

I remember after we had an ice storm here the bamboo was stuck to the ground. As the ice melted, culms would suddenly whip upright, throwing chunks of ice some distance. It was a little scary! :shock:

Brad, did have the open space filled up with bamboo....rubro was stretched out further, and the remainder filled with castillon. I did a fairly major dig to create the opening in response to a complaint from the homeowners association I belong to. It's kind of filling back in now.

Has the cold weather made it down there yet? The last two nights here were around -7*F here but the cold weather seems to have missed here and is concentrated on the east side of the Rockies.

Last nights low was 13 F tonight I think we are supposed to go sub or near zero. I put some buckets over my rufa because I don't want any damage done to them. Everything else is going to have to deal with the cold.

This arctic blast of air is causing major problems for the Citrus industry in California. Fresno had a low last night of 25 degrees. It may even get colder. http://www.wrh.noaa.gov/hnx/getprodversion.php?pil=pns&sid=hnx&version=0

We are expecting lows down to 34F or 35F Tuesday and/or Wednesday night.

I suppose everyone else is getting ready for the cold air. I will wait and see if I need to bring my plants into the garage that are still in pots. I already have all my B. Lako cuttings in the garage under 24/7 grow lights.

I think that is actually Bill and the rest of the northern folks blowing some of that cold air down here. I am going to keep my mouth shut about the warm weather for the rest of the winter.

Did I tell you it's supposed to be 81 tomorrow with lows of 70 on Sunday.... Ok, Ok... so I lied (read my previous post). Time to enjoy the warm air before the arctic blast gets here.

These kind of temperature drops are really hard on the large leaf tropical bamboos.

Last night it was 10*F here but it is now above thawing and the forecast looks good for the next week. I did look under the greenhouse panels and snow and found out that my parvifolia and kwangsiensis still have some green leaves. :cheers:

I believe today has set the record so far, 0F and dead calm. I'll see how the plants do.
Henon, Iridescens, AG divisions, Sasas, S. Y. Kimmei, H.T. Shiroshima, all had minor to extreme leaf burning when temperatures decided to say under freezing last week. -eastlandia
