My rubromarginata sustained about 10 % leaf damage so far. I would say that my low has been about 8 F nuda, aureosulcata, Fagesia dracocephala 'Rufa' are not showing any damage.

No damage for any bamboo in Cincinnati. Our official low of the winter season so far is 14*F, but that might change overnight.

20*F did fry my D. minor 'Ameonus' new leaves and the top foot of the new culms, but that was it.All the established growth this season and the old culms were fine. It's in a pot inside now, but I was suprised that 20*F didn't hurt it anymore than it did.

Lance, 0*F already! Probably not unprecedented, but I don't even want to think about temperatures below 10*F.

If it ever got down to 0F, I would lose all my bamboo. We may get a freeze once every 3 - 5 years, but even then it is only lasts for a few hours.

Some times, I wish I could grow some of the runners... but, that feeling doesn't last too long.   :P

Good luck to all our "northern" friends this winter... may your boo grow taller and stronger and may Santa bring you each the one bamboo you always wanted.

True, but if it gets down to -40, it doesn't matter if it is Fahrenheit or Centigrade. Not that it ever gets that cold here, I think the coldest it has ever gotten in the past few years is -5 F. In most recent years it hasn't gotten down to zero all winter. Of course, I do live in town.

Yep. I freeze more often, typically every 2 years, but that too only lasts 2-3 hours. I would also loose all my plants if it got down to 0*F. Heck, getting down to 25* last week was enough to scare me.

As for runners, I'm going to give a few a shot next year. If they look like they are dying I'll dig 'em up and bring them in the house. I do have some optimism though because I got a 1 gal. Green Onion bamboo from Bamboo Texas in Oct. that had been sitting in a pot outside all summer, and it is doing great. What might help my location is that we do get the occasional cold temps in the winter. :crossing fingers:

Bill, our admin has already hit -8F. And by the way Bill, what species are still mostly green after your fall season torture session?

Lowest-ever recorded temp was -40 in the town I live by. Bloomington???????? That's where all the scam mail-order catalogs I get come from. I say bring it on. I use them for mulch. I even have one's addressed to Michael Jackson coming to my house. Weird? I know.

Which Bloomington, there are a bunch? I live in the Bloomington made famous by the Pinky and the Brain episode, where they go to Bloomington, Indiana to enlist the help of Bobby Knaught in order to put together a basketball team in an attempt to take over the World.

Thanks for correcting me. The one I was thinking of is in Illinois.

Doesn't change the fact I get alot of mulch from them. Oh yeah, arborday gets the name lists from this company. So arborday is a scam, too.

The last four days have had high temps above thawing and the leaves are starting to show the damage from the last freeze. For plants that have been in the ground for over a year Arundinaria gigantea 'Macon' and Bashania quingchengshanensis are the big winners with a few gray leaves and some dry leaves but over half dark green leaves. Sasa veitchii is also looking good. P. bissetii and P. rubromarginata are also looking good but have are mostly gray leaves at the outer edges of the plantings. The inside of the plantings of P. aureosulcata also look good with P. a. 'Aureocaulis' looking outstanding with green 'needles' on the yellow bamboo, I don't think the leaves will survive but hopefully the culms will survive and leaf back out in the spring.

Two of the plants that had the greenhouse fall on them still have dark green healthy looking leaves and look much better than the rubro that is only 20 feet away from them. :hello1: It looks like the P. parvifolia and P. kwangsiensis will be keepers. :hello1:

Sometimes, a boo's rarity, puts a limited force-field around itself to protect against foreign particles trying to intercept the boo's integrity.

And Bill, we haven't hit winter, yet. So the fun has only begun. Some of mine aren't too pretty after 0F hit them.

Ya, I can't wait for winter to finally begin in a couple weeks. At least then the days will begin very gradually to get longer again. Woohoo!

Well anyway, you 2 northern guys are making me feel somewhat better because I don't believe we've gone below zero here yet; 3*F I think it's been a couple of mornings in the wee hours. Only wimps would factor in the windchill, so I won't go into that.

Wo, lo, that 'tis beautiful & almost brings a frozen tear to my eye. I can just see your willows turning their backs on your inclement weather.

Wow, Allen it looks like summer made it here even before winter.

And now, here is more melody for Willow-loving Lance...
Paul McCartney wrote:
The willow turns his back on inclement weather;
And if he can do it, we can do it, just me and you,

And a little luck, we can clear it up.
We can bring it in for a landing,
With a little luck, we can turn it on.
There can be no misunderstanding.

You know Paul, as in the Beatles. Lance have you heard of them or is this just an old folky fad?
