From a rhizome? Holy smokes...that shoot looks fat or is it illusion? I am guess 1/2 inch diameter?

The shoot is 5/8ths thick!!! Steve sent me 3 long thick rhizomes - about 2 to 3 feet long, about 1/2 inch thick. That little bud was a pea sized thing on the rhizome that I covered with about an inch of soil - the rhizomes had lots of roots with it. I used 'Miracle Grow' for the first few days until it rained. More rain tonight.

wow... very impressed with Parvifolia. You're lucky to able to enjoy such size bamboo in only its first year.

Perhaps I still have hope that my Beijing shoot in the ground will do the same?

. Wow, bamboo pics from the future  Sorry, I just love typos! Not that I ever make typps

Seriously, nice parv shoot! My glauca 'Yunzhu' rhizome did that and the new, large shoot ended up really neat looking, with distorted internodes.

Sometimes a bit of change in climate to a warmer area really spurs them to grow. When I got plants from Steve last year in late summer they immediately added lots of leaves, some of them shot culms almost immediately, and the atro shot a rhizome within a few weeks.

Hi Matthew - Yes,,that change from Rochester, NY to Pittstown,NJ seems like a drastic change, if only by a few weeks. I took my time transplanting them and dug holes for the 3 rhizomes about 3 inches deep and filled the bottoms with some potting soil & mulch, then I put the rhizomes in and covered them. I didn't' expect anything until a month had passed!!! I think it was a combination of the Miracle Grow and the rain that helped them out. I have not seen any others yet,,,but waiting till tomorrow. I find that every time I look at bamboo - it changes, even a few hours there is something going on with them! The Besetii is absolutely wild this year!!

With a much warmer climate, I wouldn't be surprised if that area gets filled, and looks kind of like a grove with upsized culms by July of 2013 because this species is simply very productive, especially in a nice climate with full sun.

Found a new Parvifolia shoot after watering yesterday. It's nowhere near what you have...more like 1/8th of an inch thick.
I think it's because there wasn't enough rhizome energy to support it at this point, but I guess the plant senses that this is the perfect time to put out shoots, so it does it as soon as it gains any energy from the leaves of the original whip shoot.

The 2nd photo is a Beijing shoot. Yes! finally...after waiting for eternity. This shoot appears to be about the same size as the one I had a month or so ago that died. However, this one grew from the ground outside so whatever comes out must be well adapted. FYI, this is from a 2 foot long piece of rhizome I buried in early April. It's been over 2 months!

There's actually something unusual about those parvifolia shoots. For a whip shoot, the shoots generally emerge on the same side off of the whip culm for obvious reasons.

2 months should not have been enough time for another rhizome capable of producing shoots to have formed so I think the only explanation would be that one of those new shoots must be a whip shoot off of the original whip culm.

Pokenei - That Parvi shoot looks good!!! Yes, it's a long wait sometimes. It should gain width as it comes out of the ground, and soon start leafing. The center hole where my big shoot popped out of, now has a 75" shoot that is fully leaved. That plant has no further shoots, but I expect more before the fall. The other 2 holes have shoots that are more than a foot high, about 6 shoots each.
Last year when I planted the Bessetii, it shot up shoots 3 times during the summer season - the 1st and 2nd died off. Then, it shot up shoots in August, much thinner, but they leafed out and made it through the winter. These shoots then shot up a myriad of shoots this spring, most are in the 15 foot range now.
That Beijing shoot looks fine! I'll have to try that for next year.

Yes, I think the new shoots grew from nodes of the original whip culm. All the new shoots are regular shoots, not whip shoots if I'd lead you to think otherwise.

The buds on the whip culm or rhizome appears to alternate, so it is normal for news shoots to appear on either side of the original whip culm.

richr, yes it looks good...but i'd rather have size over looks. I'll take your 75" shoot and you can have mine :)
The thing is though, it takes a lot of leaf mass to build up energy to produce half inch, 75" culms. Fast forward till next spring. I doubt my grove would even have enough energy to produce the kind of shoots you have over there. I think you have skipped a year or two compared with most people when it comes to new bamboo planting.

Pokenei- I think the Parvi is it's own kind of rhizome..... I have never seen anything like this before. I'm new to this since last spring, so I'm not sure,,but I have ever seen a shoot like this come from a rhizome in one season. It will be great fun to watch this next spring!
