The ABS On-line auction will be starting October 16th and we are looking for donations. If you have any plants to donate please PM me. The auctions will actually be starting as soon as I get the plants listed which could be this weekend.

I am still adding items to the auction site. I still have 18 late plant entries and 6 bamboo music CDs to add today. There have not been very many bids so I am adding the new items at very low prices.

Fargesia Jiuzhaigou 4 dking
Fargesia 'Rufa' needmore
"Chinese Walking Stick" Holmesbamboo

I will give more results later with prices.
To bad more of you could not make it to the conference. We had a great time and I will post more here when I catch up.

Thanks to all of the donors and bidders.

Gene - on line bidding was pretty low despite low min bids. I had 10 plants listed at bargain basement min bids - 6 min bids were made, 4 no bid. What's your take on low activity level ( not just my plants)?
It would appear to me even if some plants were on-line bidding only,
bidding would be low and sales dollars would be peanuts. rgds

Fred, my theory is that the donated plants had a very limited climactic appropriate region - very few would I bother to kill here.

Frankly, not sure I understand the dynamics. It seems like the same folks donate regardless of zone. Nurseries in various zones don't seem interested outside Pacific zones. Seems ABS would get max benefit if auctions were by region. Again, I may be missing the mission. Rgds

I thought that there were some interesting plants donated this time but coming from the PNW/CA, they were mostly suited for the PNW/CA. There aren't a whole lot of rare or interesting cold/heat hardy plants that could be donated really. One of these days I hope to be able to donate some of my import plants that are hardier but thus far I only recently divided the first one of those so that will take some time yet.

The majority of the ABS board has west coast connections and the few nurseries east of the Rockies seem pretty disengaged with the ABS for whatever reason. The Turtles at Our Bamboo Nursery are very active and donate plants to the live auction but they also do not ship plants.

This is the first time since joining Bambooweb that I didn't bid on any of the plants. A few months ago I adopted out all of the runners I had collected, so I wasn't going to bid on any more. The only subtropical clumpers that were in the on-line auction were B. multiplexes, which I really don't need.

This fall was a bad time for me to donate, since most of my plants were damaged by last years hard freezes, not to mention that since I'm not a seller I mostly have only one of each plant. Maybe if we have a mild winter I'll work on getting some plants ready for next years auction. Heck, I'll probably actually be at next years auction, since it is only a few hours from my house. 8)

I don't think the mix of donators has changed much ref most are from the Pnw. Ditto mix of species. Regardless, seems to me the interest in on-line bidding was down from normal. Could be the economy. Could be th feeling that on line bidding is a waste of time if those at the live auction normally win. Good to get the perspective of site members to understand the drop off. rgds
