Here is list of some upcoming bamboo events in and around Texas...
There are 2 Bamboo Events Scheduled in Austin for Saturday, February 18th, 2006:

#1. Taniguchi Japanese Garden Revitalization Project
The next Texas Bamboo Society Get - Together in Austin, TX is Saturday, February 18 at the Taniguchi Japanese Garden, located at Zilker Botanical Garden, Austin, TX. The TBS Get - Together starts at 10 am in the garden (and will go on into the early afternoon). Meet at 10 am in front of the Austin Area Garden Center Building and head on down to the garden. This is a great opportunity for everyone who wants to learn more about working with bamboo. Bring hand clippers, loppers, a saw, gloves and a beverage to drink. We will be working in an area near the koi ponds on a pathway that is frequently used, but in need of some sprucing up. Here are some pictures of the area we will be working in: http://bamboo.home.texas.net/tjgnearkoipond.html
At the January grove grooming at Zilker, we had about 15 people show up and only 4 of them were TBS members. (Press releases had been sent to 2 local Austin newspapers.) I gave a tour of the bamboo to the people present and some of them stayed after the tour and worked in the grove. All together we put in a total of 11 hours of work in a short period of time, filling up the garden center's pick up truck with debris to be hauled off. There is still much more to be done to bring the bamboo in this area up to "botanical garden" standards. Questions? Contact: Carole Meckes 512-929-9565 email: bamboo@texas.net (regarding the upcoming weather report for Saturday - if is just cold - I plan to still be there - if it is raining and cold - I may seriously reconsider...)

#2 Town Lake Trail Bamboo Grove Restoration Maintenance. Also Saturday, February 18:
Jim Phillips is involved in the restoration of a bamboo grove on the Town Lake Hike and Bike Trail. If you would like to volunteer to help with this grove, meet at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning, Feb. 18th for breakfast at the large parking lot at the south end of the MOPAC pedestrian bridge, just under MOPAC off Stratford Drive, behind ZBG. There we will mix and mingle with volunteers handling other trail projects such as Vine & Tree Planting, Stump Grinding, and Trash Pick-up. After a quick safety and trail etiquette lecture, Jim will take the bamboo crew to the east side of Barton Springs Creek. (Over coffee we will have talked about how to drive back over there and where to park.) Each team will have a cooler full of drinks. All necessary tools are provided. However those who want to try out their pruning saws are welcome to bring them. Wear long sleeve shirts, long pants and bring work gloves. Questions? Contact: Jim Phillips 512-633-2568 jamboo@bamboospecialists.com

Saturday, February 25, 2006: Grove Grooming at Porter, Texas 10 am
This grove contains about 20 acres of bamboo and has 30+ varieties most of which have not been identified. You can dig starts and take home culms. (Please bring dirt to refill your holes if you plan on digging bamboo.) The owner of the grove needs our expertise and help in learning how to manage this grove. Contact Kinder Chambers 245-593-4012 home or 254-493-0827 cell or email:txbooguru@aol.com for directions.

June 3rd and 4th , Port Arthur, Texas
8th Annual Lotus Garden Tour will be held this June 3rd and 4th on the Buu Mon Buddhist Temple grounds in Port Arthur, Texas. Last year about 1200 people come to the temple over the two days of the event. In addition to the lotuses and lilies, we have about 12 different varieties of bamboo at the temple, and the Texas Bamboo Society has been invited to be involved this time. This is an excellent opportunity for the TBS to make itself better known in southeast Texas, distribute information about bamboo culture, and even sell merchandise if you like. Jim and Judith Bussey have offered to staff a booth for the TBS at this event!

Porter Grove Grooming Event

Post by Mike McG »

I just got back from grove grooming at what was the Rev. Dr. Yates' place in Porter TX, mentioned above. We cut down several hundred, mainly dead, culms and burned them. Snap, crackle and pop; I am surprised the police didn't show up wondering who was shooting the place up. Barely made a dent in even 1 of the 20+ acres of bamboo there. These are very old groves and were totally overgrown. A lot of these poles were close to 3" in diameter and 40-50' long.

A list of the bamboo that is suposed to be growing there is as follows:

Arundinaria amabilis (now Pseudosasa amabilis - MJM) - Tonkin Cane
Arundinaria simonii (now Pleioblastus simonii - MJM) - Simon Bamboo
Arundinaria viridi-striata (now Pleioblastus viridistriata? - MJM)
Bambusa beecheyanus (now Bambusa beecheyana - MJM)
Bambusa olhamii
Bambusa multiplex - Hedge Bamboo
Bambusa multiplex 'Alphonse Karr'
Bambusa multiplex 'Chinese Goddess' - Chinese Goddess Bamboo
Bambusa multiplex 'Golden Goddess'
Bambusa multiplex 'Silverstripe' - Silverstripe Bamboo
Bambusa textillis - Weaver's Bamboo
Bambusa ventricosa
Phyllostachys aurea - Fishpole or Golden Bamboo
Phyllostachys bambusoides 'Allgold'
Phyllostachys bissetii - Bisset Bamboo
Phyllostachys congesta (now Phyllostachys atrovaginata - MJM) - Fishscale Bamboo
Phyllostachys dulcis
Phyllostachys glauca
Phyllostachys makinoi - Makino Bamboo
Phyllostachys meyeri - Meyer Bamboo
Phyllostachys nigra
Phyllostachys nigra 'Henon' - Henon or White Bamboo
Phyllostachys nuda
Phyllostachys pubescens (now Phyllostachys edulis- MJM)
Phyllostachys rubromaginata - Red-margined Bamboo
Phyllostachys viridis - Green Bamboo
Phyllostachys viridis 'Houzeau' - Houzeau Bamboo
Phyllostachys viridis 'Robert Young' - Robert Young Bamboo
Phyllostachys viridi glaucescens
Phyllostachys vivax
Pseudosasa japonica
Semiarundineria fastuosa

I added what I believe now the current name of some of these bamboo based on the 2005 ABS Source List.

Porter - B. beecheyana

Post by Mike McG »

Steve - The short answer is no, but there is a lot of stuff growing there and it was very difficult to walk through.

We spent most of the time cleaning up a mixed grove of what mainly appeared to be Ph. viridis and what definitely was 'Robert Young', near the house. After eating, we spent a little time walking around. Bill K., Samuel K., and Grady M. dug out a good sized start of B. textillis; at least that was the consensus, although it was more upright than I am used to seeing B. textillis. Near the B. textillis was a clump of what looked to me to be generic B. multiplex. After digging the B. t., Bill, Grady, and Sam were going to go around some water to a clumper on the other bank. It was probably smaller than the B. textillis but appeared from a distance to have top kill so I am not sure what this was. I think they took a start of that also so Grady may know what it was. I went off in the other direction.

We had a reasonably good turn out. Rex drove the furthest, close to 600 miles and 9 hours of driving. Kaylen was next especially since he drove from down near San Antonio up to Buckholts to pick up Kinder and Mary Len, and then stopped by our place just to say hi, and then drove down to Porter. Steve & Ann and Carole & Mark came over from Austin. We are only a couple of hours dive away and the rest of were closer. I think Ann M. is going to write something up for the TBS news letter. Everyone seemed to have a really good time in spite of the rain.

Ph Vivax or Ph viridis

Post by Mike McG »

Hi Kaylen,

I had the same discussion as to whether it was vivax or viridis with Mark M. I am not sure what it was and there may have been more than two bamboo growing at that location. The few culms I checked did not have the vertical grooves in the culm that my Ph vivax does and the culm texture felt more like Ph viridis to me. Also the live culms were more of a green than my vivax which tends to yellow in the sun, but this could have been environmental. In the end Mark agreed it could have been Ph viridis but I may have been talking him into it. At some point in time we need to get pictures of shoots from the bamboo growing in various areas at Porter to help identify what is where. Sounds like a good reason for another field trip.

Thanks again for carrying that division out of the groves for me. As usual my eyes were bigger than my ability to carry without a hand cart. :D

Even a northern boy such as myself is interested in pics of such a sort, thanks for the link.
By the way, what would average rainfall be in a year in this location.

Porter Rainfall

Post by Mike McG »

In TX the rainfall runs in essentially vertical (North/South) bands, with East TX be the highest (>54"/yr) and West TX the lowest (<14"/yr). I would expect the annual rainfall in that area to be between 45-50"/yr, but even when it is dry, there is a lake there so the water table is probably fairly high and the bamboo tap into it.

Texas meeting

Post by boonut »

I am still thinking about holding a bamboo get together in South Texas in October. My collection continues to grow. I want to pattern this after the "Spring Fling" that the Nelson's used to hold. Anyone can attend and bring plants to swap or sell. I will have some that folks can take cuttings from and perhaps some divisions.

Still trying to get an idea of whether people would come. I have 21.43 acres that I have been developing with bamboo. You can see my site at: http://www.boonut.com

Boonuts can bring tents or RV's and stay the weekend. The real problem is that we are so far south and not on the way to anywhere unless you plan on going into Mexico.

Thoughts???? If there is enough interest, I will hold the event.

Allen,

I would love to come, but as you mentioned, I'm not going to Mexico anytime soon or probably never, but if you do have a boo get together, take plenty of pictures and share the event through them for those who can't come.

That is too far in advance for me to make a hard commitment, but I am definitely interested and so put me down for a tentative yes.

RE: from the Texas chapter...

Due to lack of response, I won't be holding the first bamboo get together at the Boonut Farm this year. My bamboo is still fairly small, so I will give it another year or two to let the giant's really grow. Bamboo is still fairly new in South Texas so we may need a little more time to get the word out.

If anyone really wants to come for a visit, just send me an email and we will coordinate a time.
