2008 ABS Conference

Post by bambooweb »

ANNOUNCEMENT: ABS2008 will be in San Francisco!
The Annual Meeting and Conference of the American Bamboo Society will take place at the bamboo-friendly San Francisco Zoo, San Francisco, California on November 7 - 8 2008. Your Northern California Chapter has undertaken the hosting responsibility with enthusiasm. The planning is in its early stages, but pre-conference and post-conference activities are likely to be offered. The General ABS Membership Meeting and the rare plant auction will be held on Saturday November 8 at the Zoo. Vendor inquiries are invited at this time.
Contact either Suzanne Coffee mizhickory@yahoo.com or Rosalie Ross rosyross@aol.com for details.

New March 6th Announcement

"Urban Bamboo" --- the 2008 Annual Meeting of the American Bamboo Society will be in San Francisco.

November is the time of the year when San Francisco is at its most beautiful. The weather is mellow and trees are just starting to take on fall colors, and it is a great time for the ABS Annual meeting.

Members of the Northern California Chapter of the ABS (NCC) are inviting specialists from around the country and the world to this event that will be held at the San Francisco Zoo, located on San Francisco's Western shoreline. The sixty acre Zoo has a well established bamboo landscape utilizing many species which grow in the unique summer fogs the region is famous for. Participants will be given time to wander the Zoo grounds and enjoy the grand collection of animals and birds -- one of the finest Zoos in the nation!

The Zoo's facility manager has been a great advocate for bamboo for years (with encouragement from Northern California Chapter member Hastings Schmidt, who donated a great deal of bamboo to the Zoo). The NCC quarantine greenhouse is located on Zoo grounds. The Zoo has a first class meeting facility and a great area for our trade show and plant sales. So plan to come exhibit your wares or bring a board to show what you've been up to.

Planned featured presentations include bamboo architecture from Brazil by Celina Llerena; Hui Xue on plants from Yunnan, China -- some of which are surprisingly cold-tolerant; Gerard Minakawa, a Bolivian-American-Japanese sculptor and furniture maker; all tied together with our general theme of "Urban Bamboo." Peggy Stern will show the new Chusquea bamboo in the public park in Quito, Ecuador.

Walking tours will focus on urban plantings in San Francisco's downtown as well as the amazing work done in recent years to showcase mountain clumpers in the Arboretum at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. All topped off with a party cruise on San Francisco Bay on the last night. Many ABS old-timers will remember the 1994 Bay cruise with the backdrop of the City's lights reflected off the shimmering waters.

Mark your calendars for November 7 & 8 - plus the optional days for the ABS events in San Francisco!
Wednesday, November 5 - ABS Board meeting - open to all ABS members.
Thursday, November 6 - optional activities in the Bay area.
Friday and Saturday (November 7 & 8 ) ABS Meeting at the San Francisco Zoo.
Sunday, November 9, optional events in the Bay Area.

Please forgive any changes in the program, dates, or times which may occur as arrangements become finalized.

I will be heading to California to see boo in March, so won't make the conference in November. I am sure it will be fun.

Just a quick question that I thought about after the last ABS meeting/auction. Is there a reason why it's so late in the year as opposed to Summerish after the shooting season has passed? This question comes only because of the auction last year, I have one plant holding over at the donor's (hi Mantis!) until spring-ish because it would likely die in the cold during transportation during the colder months.

Not trying to change anything, it was just a question that I had after my experience last year so thought I'd throw it out!

It will be my brother's birthday around then this year, but I am still going to try and make it (don't laugh Bill!!! =D). I have an Uncle in San Francisco, so it might be a fun combo trip to go see him and the city for awhile afterwards.

The conferences are normally held mid-October. I think the ABS bylaws state that the annual meeting should be the third week of October but I could be wrong on that.
The reason that it was in November in 2007 was because that was the only date that Longwood was available. I suspect that is the same reason with the San Francisco Zoo.

Dang it! Your brother gets to pick when he wants his birthday each year and I have to settle for the same date each year! :?

Hey Bill... forgive the lack of knowlege.... I am not an ABS member... is the meeting open to all, or just members, (guess I could just join....), and is there a ticket, or is it a drag-yourself-in event?

Thanks!

Gene

(who is still trying to convince his wife a boo weekend would be fun.....)

Maybe you should suggest a game of Peek-a-Boo would be fun to play on the weekend trip.
