tropicals/sub-tropcials Vs. temperates?
Seriously, I have very little advice to offer to Ph. type bamboo, and don't expect a lot of northern response if I ask about Dendros.
Also, there are extreme differences when talking about accomplishing the same tasks between different bamboos. For example, when digging divisions, with temperate species it is paramount to get massive rootballs for the divisions to be viable, whereas with tropical/sub-tropical species the root mass isn't as important.

Make me a mod of the subtropical/tropical board, and I guarantee that the n00bs will know when they are in the wrong place.

Simple, if it is a runner it is golden. If it is a clumper it is vulgaris.
Now one step further... grown from seed: runner = moso, clumper = strictus
Tada!

and if they got it off ebay???
Re: sub-forums?
Now we are getting into difficult territory...
Off eBay:
Clumber = some variety of Bambusa multiplex. Most likely B. m. 'Golden Goddess'
Runner = ??? I've never paid attention what people get off eBay... nigra or A. gigantea would be my first guesses, but I'd have to refer that to the runner sub-forum.
