Identfying Unkown Bamboo from the Shoots

Post by Mike McG »

Bill,

Is there some way to list/show only those photographs in the database that picture new shoots as another aid in identifying unknown plants? I realize what I am asking may involve a certain amount of work in terms of selecting and linking the pictures and formatting the pages. If you think it is doable, and you could explain how to do it to a novice, I would certainly volunteer to help.

Mike, I don't know the answer to your question but the more shoots and other ID tools such as the culm leaf photos Roy has been posting would be/are a great addition to the bamboo database.

I'll try to committ to taking lots of shoot photos this spring.

Currently you can find photos with "shoot" in the description at: http://tinyurl.com/gemnt

The photo database now has the ability to sort by Culm, Shoot, Culm, Sheath, Flower or seed, Leaf, Branch detail, Rhizome, and Overall Plant shape. Once I get the output ready I will probably ask for help to organize the over 2500 photos that were already in the database.

Thanks Bill, I guess I should have tried just searching for "shoot." It works reasonably well. It does pick up culms with the where the letters "shoot" are in the label and possibly misses some pictures of shoots were the letters are not, but it is still very useful.

Brad,

Excellent idea for everyone wanting to improve and build on the image gallery. Unless I'm mistaken, most of the temperate bamboos shoot in the Spring, followed by the tropicals in the Summer.--Roy

Roy, what I may do is upload them to my own website as I can do that much faster en masse with my dialup connection than posting them 1 at a time to this site. Then can you EASILY move them here, or is that humbug to do?

needmore,
You can lose a little bit of quality by copying images that way.

Brad,

All I need is the go ahead when the time comes, along with your permission. Hopefully you won't get mad if I bring out the details in your pictures and they look better at Bambooweb.info than they do on your site. :D

Feel free to push the quality. I have 100+ photos that I need to work into the site before I start taking more 2006 photos. I open them in the photo editor Dreamweaver uses - Flash? Then resize them smaller to decrease download times, but I never mess with tweaking the quality up, its all about page download time for me.

Brad,
If you think it would be easier, you could send me a CD and I could upload.

just a thought,
