View posts since last visit

Post by Mike McG »

Bill,

I do not always have access to this site during the week days. So when I do get access, I sometimes use the "View posts since last visit" option and then page back to the list of new posts, rather than looking at the date of the posts in the general categories. A minor problem with this is that when I use this option, which appears to be a search, it seems to quickly lose the list of new posts. I originally noticed it did this if I clicked on a link, but it now seems to do it on a page with pictures, again I presume because of the links.

Am I doing something wrong or is this inherent in the system? Has this been discussed before, if so I can do a search for the solution?

If this is inherent, would it be reasonably easy to add an option to list a limited number (one page) of post topics or individual posts by date irrespective of the general category and irrespective of whether the site thinks you have read them or not, showing the latest first? As I noted, this is a minor problem so please ignore this if it is a significant effort.

Bill, thank you for the great job you are doing with this site and the effort you have put into it.

Mike,

It seems that your browser is not doing the "remembering" for you. Perhaps checking the "cache" settings might work.

Here's the process I use. I have bookmarked the link below (really nothing more than a "search for unread posts") and I have the bookmark titled "Posts" on my "Bookmark toolbar" at the top of my browser window. When I want to see if there are any new post at the forum, then I just click "Posts" and I get a list of new posts or a message sawing there are no new posts.

After I read a post, then I click on "Post" again and I see the new posts I haven't read marked in orange and the one I just read marked in blue. I continue doing this until I have read all the new posts. The blue marked posts (the new ones I read, will be brought up for display each time I click on "Posts" until I close my browser ([not the browser page, but close the browser completely]).

So that's the reason I say: "It seems that your browser is not doing the "remembering" for you." Hope this helps.

I will be upgrading the forum software later this year so hopefully it will work better. I have read about people having the same type of problems on forums if they are connecting through proxy servers or services such as AOL.

Roy & Bill - Thanks for the replies.

I have added the link to my links bar as well as my desktop. I try it out next weekend after a few more new posts appear.

I am using a Linksys wireless router in the house and wireless broadband to my ISP so maybe something in that set up makes Bambooweb think I have disconnected when it goes to another link.

As I said it is a minor problem and I can just go back and look at the dates on the posts.
