Bamboo: Pest identification

Post by KevinD »

Hi all

A few days ago I discovered some weird buds on our black bamboo (see pictures). There is a lot of it, the buds are hard and if you crack them open there is a brownish liquid inside.

Do you have an idea what this is and how to get rid of it?
The bamboo is not growing so well, I assume he doesn't like these buds/parasites.

Any idea / input is much appreciated!
Thanks in advance
Kevin

Send photos to bamboo nurseries near you. They are helpful and can best identify the problem and determine what you can do to rid the problem. Rgds

I've been waiting for a dry day to go take photos, but I have seen the same thing on some of my small groves. Black sooty mold it typical of aphid activity, so I assumed that these clusters were something similar -- some sort of sap-sucking insect that was creating these globs of junk.

I first noticed them a couple years ago, and I treated with Bayer Tree and Shrub systemic, as I'm not a fan of spraying anything. This seemed to work to prevent the spread, but the culms that already have the black junk still have it (although I suppose any insects in there have died).

Note that you can't eat the shoots from a bamboo that you've used this on, as systemics enter the root system and spread through the entire plant.

Hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for your insights.
I'll keep an eye on it and see if sth. moves or the globes change over time - this might help for identification and how to get rid of it.
