rhizome rot or ?

Post by Robbie78 »

Hi I was poking around in my phy atrovaginita and I cut off a piece of rhizome and it looked almost rotten. Is this normal for the rhizome to look like this after winter I had it in about 3 in of mulch

Not normal but not all that unusual and that section may not be viable but don't worry, the ones you want are the ones you cant see. I avoid probing around for them, I think that it is never good to dig around in the mulch despite how curious one is.

What causes this? Is it too much rain? Where I live I have already had over 36 inches of rain this year, also this was a new rhizome from last growing season, I just really want some new shoots and I didnt get any last year due to it being a 25 gallon and being newly planted, it sent out quite a few rhizomes, so heres to hoping
