Re: Fargesia Shoots
Moriphen, how old is your 'rufa'? The only way I can see the base of mine two plants is to hold back tons of arching culms. Yours doesn't seem to have any arching going on.

Re: Fargesia Shoots
Alan_L, That F. 'rufa' is a two year old 5 gallon planting. Its underneath my tulip poplar tree, which gives it half shade from April to October Because of that the canes develop fewer leaves and are slightly more upright.

Re: Fargesia Shoots
Fargesia denudata has plain green shoots with a short lived wax that gives the appearance of faded stripping, sheaths become white and give a checkered white/green look to new culms before falling off. Finally older canes become yellow in color when exposed to the sun.
F. denudata
Fargesia robusta 'wolong': shoots have a red coloring to them as apposed to the white found in other forms of F. robusta.
Fargesia sp. Jiuzhaigou 04: Just prior to leafing out.
