What's wrong ?

Post by Shiro »

Hi,

I took some snaps to show my bamboos on my site (see below, link on home page) but quality was poor. One reason is certainly for some of them that the background was green but even the other ones are not very good ...

Can somebody help ?

Great forum and I like options such as Plant List

Hello Shiro, and welcome. Can tou tell us more about your camera? Your photos look overexposed to me but a little more info would help us figure out the problem.

Hello David and thank you for the welcome.

My camera is a Canon Eos Rebel XT with here a Sigma macro lens (70 F 2.8 ).

As you say, photos are overexposed. I thought the white pot (aim was to be a height reference, 15 cm here) would have a positive influence on the balance but it seems to be the opposite. Otherwise close-ups are OK : Image

Are you shooting in automatic, program or manual mode? I have this camera in a film model, but have no experience with the digital model. Tell me more about your camera settings.

I'm shooting in P(rogram) mode with standard settings.

Shiro,
Just turn it to auto, I think you will be much happier. In program mode you may change the shutter speed, aperture, ASA, or - exposure bracket, and lots of other things that can play havoc with your shots. You might also go to manual mode and experiment with say 1/125 shutter and a range of f stops, and diff light metering modes. Your camera will shoot very nicely in auto, so I would try that first.

David,

I just could not believe it was just my P-mode that was wrong ... So I tried a second series of shoots and ... much better ... Why ?

What was similar : P-mode, standard settings, sunny day, green background but ...

... the first was at 12:00 am (F8, 1/500) and the second was at nearly 5:00 pm (F 4.5 1/160) ... Never shoot at noon, this will give bad results ... I knew this but ...

Thanks anyway !!!
