Update on bamboo

It's been a long time since I made any posts here. I wanted to update anyone interested with the status of the bamboo in my 'grove'. The henon had a great up sizing this year. The shoots are almost twice as large than last year. Unfortunately, my moso has been snuffed out by my henon. I have not noticed any of my aurea shoots yet. Maybe in a week or so.

I'm not sure how tall these are going to get this year but I have two new ones that are already at about 17' and have probably another foot or two to go. They haven't really started putting out branches yet but it won't be long. I ventured out and did a thorough investigation on my aurea. I actually have a huge amount of new shoots coming up. They have really surprised me. I have slacked in the past two or three years with upkeep on them but the aurea is about 30' out from the initial planting location. That's excellent! I'm hoping that they will continue with vigorous expansion and choke out the weeds there. I'm in the process right now of cutting out the dead culms and making it look nice again.

Wow those are big. I rarely see Henon this big in real life or posted online.

That thick and only 17' tall? That's surprising.

When I first started this project a few years ago, I dug up a large culm that was 50' tall and 3" diameter. The root ball was approximately 200to 250lbs and was about 3' diameter. I'm hoping that in the next 5 years I start seeing some new growth close to that size.

How many years exactly? :albino:

I planted a small 2 gallon Grey Henon in my yard 8 years ago and the culms are finally reaching 1.75-2 inches this year. Crazy how a huge transplant like that can expedite grove maturity.

How did you get that bad boy to your house? I am assuming you had to cut the culm much shoter, right? XD. I gotta know.

Sorry for the late reply. A couple miles up the road from where I live is where I got it. I had dug a few smaller ones before but I really had my eye on the larger ones. I had no truck to haul one in at that time so I got my brother in law to help with his work truck. It took a couple hours to get it dug and in the truck. I grossly underestimated the amount of weight that the root ball had. This thing was heavy, I guess about 200lbs or so. Probably a bit more. It took both of us to get it to the truck and loaded. I put it to the tail gate and tied the top to the front bumper, driving slow to not damage the limbs and strip the leaves. The small grove I have is 9 years old.

Very nice looking henon. You said the moso got snuffed out. Did it die, or is it just just growing really slowly? I tried to email you with a couple of questions. Hope your email address is up to date.
