Hello--

Has anyone had luck growing bamboo by cutting a 2-node section, dipping in root hormone, and then either planting in a small pot or putting in water? Any tips or advice appreciated.

Thanks!

Well, if by 2-node section you mean short rhizome section, it could work, but stored energy in small division would be an issue. That would go without the rooting hormone.

Propagation of stem cuttings would only work with tropical bamboos (bambusa and dendrocalamus). You could even get them to root without the hormone, but I guess it helps. Temperate bamboos can not be propagated that way. Culms will just not grow roots. You can propagate them in-vitro with a bunch of plant hormones and start a tissue culture laboratory. :)

Thanks Tarzanus--

It is in fact the Dendrocal we are talking about; the Angel Mist/Ghost Bamboo.

Is it best to leave the cuttings in water until they (hopefully) grow roots, or dip them in root hormone and stick them in a small pot with soil?

I've read they are usually planted in sterilized sand and pre-treated with indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) hormone. They can be propagated using branch or culm cuttings. There are many researches about the topic online. I think the published articles are free to read.
