Frozen bamboo

Post by green »

My grove of Moso froze this past winter - have shoots coming up now. Have been cutting down the dead canes, more of a thinning so far ( about 30% so far ). Anyone know of a reason to leave any of the old stock standing? Got 7 years of growth here in N. Arizona (7a) before this last freeze. Thanks in advance.

I would not cut down the old until the new is leafed out and does not leave an impression when you press a thumbnail in the culm. Although it looks sloppy, it can be helpful to leave the dead!

I also like to leave the dead until the new culms have hardened as they lend support. Beats having your brand-new culms snapped off by wind or squirrels or whatever your main bamboo foe is there.
