Hi all,
I have noticed Phyllostachys aurea flowering in about 5 sites around Auckland New Zealand. Anyone else noticed anything around the world?
Thanks, Mark Mortimer

Mine doesn't. Are you sure? Any specific Aurea cultivar?

Hi Tarzanus,
Yep I'm sure it's plain old aurea. Here are some photos one of my clients sent me, but I have since seen the same thing in a number of other locations.

I also have common form of P. aurea. I will see next year if it decides to start flowering. Perhaps you in the southern hemisphere are a season earlier. 8)
Hopefully our winter won't decimate it.

This species is the most common bamboo in Texas, so I will be sure to check as many groves as I can. Of course, they might all be one clone.

I did check one grove in SE Texas today, and it is not flowering.

The following might be of interest to some following this thread. See the section on "Seed production":

Just an update, there are about 10 aura clumps growing by the side of the motorway south of Auckland, and most of them are in full flowering mode. I have also spotted other clumps around the city which are flowering now. It seems to be speeding up.

Another update:
aurea continues to flower.
Flowering seen all over top half of North island.
Not all groves are flowering.
Some groves not flowering a month ago are doing so now.
Groves which are flowering are starting to die.

Are there any viable seeds? If it is in full flowering mode, there should be. No signs of flowering here in Europe, though. We might see something in the spring.

Have you noticed any flowering where you're at yet, Tarzanus?

It got warm and buds started elongating, but they are not developed enough to tell. It is cold again and they should slow down considerably. So far no signs of flowering here.

I'm new to bamboo and can't tell if this is usual foliage or it is indeed flowering. Image

Nope. Just regular branches.
