Mine has started to flower as well on both new & old culms. Seems so odd to have a plant that produces a flush of new growth and then to flower and die with no viable seed.

no viable seed is the real bummer. I wonder why certain flowerings don't end in viable seed. I had a japonica that started flowering, no viable seed. the guy I got it from said he had 3 japonica plants, and everybody that got divisions of one of the clones had flowerings, including his original plant, but no viable seed. The other 2 japonicas, supposedly not divisions of the same one, didn't flower. Perhaps certain plants have some faulty genes for triggering flowering, and only when the whole species goes to seed do you get any viable seeds?

It is my impression that this bamboo is flowering everywhere and no one has any seed.
