It was 25F last night, I probably lost a lot of small shoots but I was able to save the bigger ones.

Hope you saved 'em, I lost Moso shoots about that size once when I tried to protect them from cold, I cooked them in manure.

That sucks. Yea the space was pretty small so I was trying not to fry them with the heater but not let them freeze at the same. I've never used manure, I've thought about it though. The closest horses around here are farther than I trust my trailer to make it home with a full load.

My plan was brilliant, I had fresh manure that I knew generated heat so I clumped it up around the shoots overnight. I should have set an alarm so that I knew when they were ready to eat as they were overcooked when I checked them in the AM.

Geez.. that's too bad. Maybe if you put it in a bucket or something and covered the area with a tarp, it would keep the air warm.

I'm sure that would have been a better idea, but heck I had the manure and it was generating heat so....

I was removing escaped rhizomes today, and noticed a lot of awoken buds on Pseudosasa japonica 'Tsutsumiana'. It will most likely start pushing out the shoots in two weeks or so. Shiroshima and aurea should also be somewhere in that timeframe.

Moso is shooting like crazy. All looks like my largest bamboo, P. aureosulcata 'Spectabilis' will be a disappointment the second year, but when I lay my eyes on the Moso, I get happy again. It may even end up being larger (shoot/culm diameter) than Spectabilis, which would be a total surprise.
