Two reasons for that. I learned its first leaves on fresh shoots are completely yellow with only traces of chlorophyll pigment. Gradually it increases with each following leaf that replaces the previous one. Leaves that lack pigment are extremely sensitive to full sun exposure and only thrive in almost ful shade. As they get more green, the leaves start geting less and less prone to sunburn. Sun is now starting to lose strength in northern hemisphere and the leaves got greener. In a month or so, I expect them to look just as good as if they were planted in shade.

Thanks for reminding me that were northerners are on the downward slope of summer. With our temps hovering in the 90's here more days than not for the last few weeks I'd almost forgotten. Still lots of good growing time to go though!

Thank you!
It looks like they might "explode" next year. If the young rhizomes mature enough (I don't really know how many there were last year). It looks like they began to colonize the raised bed.
They seem to be fine with that overly exposed location, but they look like trash for quite some time in the early summer. I will need to shade them earlier next spring. It would be interesting to see the variegation on larger culms, especially on the first seedling. I also have no clue how the culms age and how the color changes with time. It will be interesting to see all that. :)

And people say gardening is boring. I'm always excited watching a new plant develop.

Compared to pale, almost completely yellow spring and early summer look, now it has the darker green autumn foliage. It is changing appearance based on which part of the year it is.

Also, culms get nicely colored as all arcana seedlings tend to. Culms are nicely varigated now with many (sometimes one thick stripe) dark green stripes.

Some more photos. I have finally found some time to snap and post them. Just started snowing here so the bamboo season is officially coming to an end. :)

I didn't take any photos during the winter, if someone wants to see completely frozen (yet alive) bamboo leaves I can post those  . So far the seedlings are doing great. The soil got frozen and they lacked water, but they seem unaffected so far. I hope for a nice upsize in around 2 months. Last year, winter was a bit warmer and we've had much more snow, which protected them during cold weather. They started shooting in mid March - first bamboo that started last year, even before my Moso seedling that is also fast to shoot each year.

I expect pencil size shoots and hope for anything larger than that. :)

Does it show similar progressive (or should I say regressive) variegation where it starts totally yellow when the shoot leafs out and gets greener with each following leaf? Never heard of your bamboo yet, so I tried finding some photos. Only found 2 and it's hard to say if it's similar, based on those two photos.

If you haven't already, you can check for more photos all the way from the time I planted the seeds until now on my blog. I hope this search string will show all results: https://cold-hardy.com/?s=variegated+arcana
