Basically, I want to get a black clumping bamboo that also has edible shoots. My growing space has good width and the bamboo can spread nicely so I don't want something wimpy, but I'm hesitant of growing 100 ft bamboo in the city. I also want the shoots to be large, so I want to find a middle ground. Is Dendrocalamus brandisii 'Black' shorter or taller than 100 ft/30 m (the height of 'Betung Hitam' Dendrocalamus asper)? I read some conflicting information of it being 60 ft, 120 ft or 100 ft, so personal experiences would be best. If it's taller than I'll go with Gigantochloa atroviolacea instead, at the expense of less cold tolerance. I live in zone 9b in Arizona, but over time, the bamboo will increase its own humidity. If you like, you can also answer the question of the height Dendrocalamus will reach in my climate.

I am interested in finding out if you are growing the Dendrocalamus brandisii 'Black'? I live in Florida zone 9a/b and was considering Dendrocalamus brandisii 'Black' or Betung Hitam because they tend to be more cold tolerant then Gigantochloa atroviolacea & bambusa Lako

Don't know much about black bamboo species you're talking about, but if you plan on harvesting bamboo shoots, I think you should worry that your bamboo may not grow tall at all rather than it being too tall.
