Re: Flirting with Bamboo
Bambusa oldhamii doesn't grow as large as the Dendrocalamus, but the shoots seem to be tastier.
Re: Flirting with Bamboo
JD, I have intentions of growing both bamboos. Wish me luck!

If you can grow it well in your climate, I'm a huge fan of Nastus elastus - very pretty & unusual plus apparently tasty shoots.

Needmore, See me in three years. I will have plenty available. I am curious to know where and how you were able to taste Nastus elastus?

I spent 10 years in Hawai'i and saw it there, but I said 'apparently' tasty as I have not tasted them myself but have read this about it. The foliage is quite unique to my eye and the shoots are handsome as well.

Re: Flirting with Bamboo
What an interesting selection. I can grow the oldhamii in Austin, but it's really just big and not that attractive.
The only one on your list that I might stand a chance of growing is Thyrsostachys Siamensis. It looks like such a beauty and it might even grow here if
things keep warming up.
The rest are just to darn big for my urban lawn, but if I lived elsewhere...all of them.

I thought the T siamensis didn't take any frost very well? That is one that always disappointed me in person, as did S brachycladum - the ones I found in Hawai'i did not look healthy but the ones I saw were mostly in pots although on the campus of UH they put the T siamensis in-ground but I moved away before it got very large.
