The Northeast Chapter site says of Rufa: " It grows into a large clump (6-8 ft wide) with arching stems. The maximum height is 10 ft. maximum and culm diameter is 0.5 inches. USDA hardiness zone 5-9. Originally from Gansu, China, "

My Rufa from Kimmei is already 3 meters (9+ft) or more across but barely 2 meters tall. Has anyone acheived the heights mentioned above, i.e 8-10ft? If so which cultivar is it?

I think your plants size is normal for the species, my Fargesia dracocephala 'Rufa' was planted in 2009 as 5 gallon and is now 3.3 ft tall and 4 ft wide ( 1 meter high and 1.2 meters wide). Our latitude is 39.8917° with the bamboo getting 3 hours of morning sun and 2 hours of afternoon sun. The plant has the support of a 6ft fence and nearby plant competition is forcing it to grow taller. Rainfall is year round with totals between 45 and 60 inches (114cm-153cm).

Mine seems to be going outward before going upwards.

This is the first year that it seems to be putting on a bit of height.

This picture is from last year this year it is going to be just over 7' tall. I planted this plant as a one gallon plant when this daughter was born.

I have planted a number of these plants. They seem to grow more upright in shady situations.
