This year, we have had an unseasonably warm Winter
and a fabulous Spring in Northeastern Oklahoma. Needless to say,
everything is shooting, and I can't seem to think of anything but bamboo!

Our Henon is on it's third year. Two Sundays ago, it was just starting to
break the soil. Yesterday, we counted 156 shoots, the tallest being 5' 6"
in the afternoon.

Everything is doing so well, and better than expected, even the Phyllostachys
viridis 'Robert Young' that hubby accidentally demolished when it had only been
in the ground for a few months.

Fess up, you're excited, too!

Me too, I get home and then stay outside until dark lots of days this time of year! And if it's dark when I get home, I'm soon outside with a flashlight! It's a disease and infectious! Fortunately, the only thing that will help is to get more bamboo! :D

Same here, especialy if I'm expecting something new and exciting to happen with the shoots.

A number of the Phyllostachys haven't put up shoots yet, I have high hopes for them.

I expect to go home and look up at some of the Moso shoots this evening. :)

Moso in your zone? Do tell! :D

We live in a zone 7, but our weather actually performs a bit
better than it is 'supposed' to. We were told not to expect much
out of Moso, but bought it anyway. This is our first year planted, as it overwintered in a pot buried in the garden.

Last year, we visited a shop in Oklahoma City that had Moso established and growing, but it didn't seem overly impressive. Mind you, their area is a bit colder than ours, so we'll just have to wait and see. When we saw the Moso stand in OKC, hubby and I both agreed that given it's limitations because of weather, if we had to choose, we'd stick with Vivax. In the end, we tried both just to see what happens. I'm hoping for at least a little excitement.

Fox, how old is your Moso stand?

Karen

*Whew* I hadn't realized how long I had them, March of 2005, but they were really tiny back then. I kept in pots for several years before I planted them outside.

I had been told that Moso would only get about the size of a small shrub in Indiana. But due to the weird Winter they were not top killed which gives them an advantage to size up. They seem to have taken that advantage. :)

My nigra has enjoyed the warm winter too, and is REALLY sizing up. Will post more once they get taller and I can see the culm diameter.
