Brown tips on leaves....

I am growing phyllostachys aurea koi indoors in large pots. They are putting out leaves, and new culms are growing, but the tips of the leaves all turn brown. I fertilized it once with grass fertilizer in the spring, and water it when the soil gets dry to a depth of about 4 inches. It gets Southern light. I asked the nursery where I got it for advice, and they really couldn't give me any. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. -Mark

Salts building up in the soil? Take them outdoors and flush the soil with water periodically.

I'm not sure how that could be. When I got them a few months ago, I transplanted them into bigger pots with that Miracle Gro moisture control soil, and then I only fertilized them this spring with an all nitrogen grass fertilizer; no potash or phosphate. So I'm at a loss what to do.

I agree with Steve. The first thing to try is flushing the soil. Run lots of water through it (outdoors) and don't save the runoff. Since this washes out pretty much every nutrient as well, you might want to add some fresh compost to the pot, and some slow-release fertilizer like Osmocote.

I flushed them; now I guess I'll see what happens next. Thanks.

I flushed the soil on one, and left the other alone as a control. No difference. They both are growing leaves and new shoots, but the tips of the leaves still turn brown; even as they are growing. Other suggestions?

Thanks.

They're still indoor plants, right? What about humidity -- is it low? Is the plant in a draft from an air conditioning vent?

Is your water chlorinated? or softened? any purification chemicals from the utility?

I have often heard the recommendation to let water stand for 24 hours (basically distilling) before watering some plants.

Pain in the A$$, but it works for many potted plants.

It has worked for my potted bamboos as well.

I use empty auto window washer bottles.

Lohan2b, what did it end up being?
Or what helped?
I'm having the same issue with a bambusa lako.
