They are growing a little slower than expected, but we have had cooler weather lately too.

How did you wind up with a bed of shoots and no evidence of mature culms?

The winters top-kill the culms. The past two years, I have been cutting them back in late winter/early spring. Next year I may leave them. I have been told by another local grower the old, dead culms help support the grove, but I have observed it doesn't mind the culling.
