Quick ? Has anyone used Nuda as a screen??

Post by kstanwick »

I believe I can dig some nuda on Rt. 287...but was curious if anyone has used Nuda as a screen?? I want an area say 3 x 20....I would use YG but i think the guy doesn't want anyone to dig anymore at his house.....

Thanks in advance

I don't have quite a screen yet -- planted 2 gal. nudas last season -- but have seen a verrrry impressive one in southeast Mass. that has to be at least 100' long, 30' deep and 25' tall.

But in regards to screening, could you see what was behind the great wall of nuda?

No. The stand was so dense - mature culms - and deep (30') it was a perfect visual barrier. Even a stand 10' deep would probably have had the same blocking ability.

Sounds quite impressive. I hope we can find out someday whether nuda is really hardy to the max, or a boo myth.

I'm in 6b, and even in the mild winter we had this past season, the nudas I put in an exposed location last season - only 3' tall, small culms- had total leaf burn, though the culms are unharmed. An 8' nuda in a sheltered spot had no leafburn and is perfect.

As has been written by many bambooseros, nuda does seem more wind-sensitive than a lot of other species of Phyllostachys. However, the rhizomes and roots are supposed to be rock hardy to at least zone 5 and maybe 4b.

Thanks Cady.....Although the nuda is a bit far for me....about an hour and a half, since i cleared out some of my yard i want to recreate a screen on one side of my property ....I was curious how thin i can make the screen....obviously thicker would be better but i know nuda is probably my best choice for hardiness. Steve (hanglus) told me about it. Maybe he will chime in with some pics of what he got.

Ah, but are we sure laddy? What about Bissetii or Rubro? Both will form your screen quicker than Nuda and probably look better year in and year out. If you're in a solid 6a then Rubro should be plenty hardy - are you already growing it and not finding it so?

I'd ditto what Brad says about bissetii or rubro. They are a better gamble if your growing spot is exposed to dry, cold winds in the winter. Rubromarginata is my pick of the two, actulally. Even my bissetii's leaves are toast when blasted by winter winds. But it tends to form denser, shrubbier young stands than nuda, so the leaves on the inner culms are protected and remain green, while the outer culms' leaves are fried.

My young rubro, on the other hand, next to a bissetii and a mannii/decora in the same wind alley, seems immune to wind. The lbissetii and mannii/decora have a lot of dried-dead leaves, but the rubro is as green as a fresh shamrock.

well i got 4 nice 26 ft divisions of that nuda. I couldn't resist. driving home was a bit scary with 20 ft hanging off the back of my truck. Us jersey people live in the "police state" I got a few pics. i'll post soon. I think you both are probably right as far as appearance goes. I think i'll throw these babies on the hill behind my house working on that evergreen screen.....tough digging though....I'll say that much....there was a fence that separates rt. 287 and the residential neighborhood. what i got was right next to the fence. lots on the highway side but couldn't get to that without parking on the interstate. branches don't start until about 15 ft up. looking at the mini grove that was there, it looked a bit sparse.or thin...it isn't the screen i am looking for, but how can you not take advantage of some free bamboo. Steve if you are reading the forum thanks for the info on the location.

Props to you on scoring the big 'boo. It may be skimpy now, but you know that patience and lots of manure compost will result in a screen, down the road (no pun intended, though we know that your nuda WILL go down the road without a barrier).

Nuda is hardy for us zone 6 folks, totally, and foliar burn isn't a biggie. 'Sides, no bamboosero in his or her right mind would turn down free 'boo. It would just be wrong.

What's the last pic, the grove in which you dug. :?: Quite amazing how bamboo looks like willow from the distance.

Sorry Lance i should throw in a quick narrative....first pic...the divisions at my house....note alot of trees still bare....second two are from the culdesac area in the neighborhood. where the grove was. different angles....one showing the culms overhanging my truck...that is how i drove home....about 70 miles or so. there is a fence that is 8 ft high. the grove pretty much ends at the fence. A few culms came thru on the side i was on...mentioning a willow...it appeared that a corkscrew willow was amongst where i dug. alothough looking again at the pics...you can't see it...
