Bamboo Assistance

Post by boonut »

The latest tropical storm really dumped an enormous amount of rain here. We had gusts of 73mph and sustained winds of 53mph. One of my big Parker Giants is leaning way over. Some of the others had broken culms... but, they will survive. I thinned one Parker and so it didn't have the wind resistance. The other, I didn't get a chance to thin and it blew over. I may be able to get it upright, but it just keeps raining. The ground is saturated. If I could get my tractor out there, I could get it upright. Trying to figure out how to do such a big bamboo with ropes. Any ideas?

Even my big papaya took a hit this time. I lost about five branches. Two were in the 10" range.

Bury a sand anchor, hook up ropes and a come along to pull it back up. Use boards to prop the plant up as you go and need to reset the come along.

Steves idea should work but you might want to pull from a higher angle. a tripod or Aframe with a pully to pass your pull line through would do that.
Take pictures.

Run your rope over a board stood on end between the plant and the anchor, like in raising a wind mill.

Thanks for the ideas. It is starting to dry out a little... so I may be able to get the tractor out there.

Lesson learned for me is to keep all bamboo clumps thinned out... especially during hurricane season. I have two Parker Giants about 30 feet from each other. I thinned one and not the other. The one that was almost all the way over was not thinned.
