I have a 2-year old clump of B. tuldoides that I'd like to divide it's 20 culms into separate divisions.
No new culms have started coming up, yet. Probably in early June.
Is early April a good or acceptable time to divide the clump?
When I planted the original 2 culm division in July 04, it put new culms until November.

Where do you live? Geographic location is an important element in working with bamboo.

Your area is a little bit cooler than mine, but when I divide tropical bamboos, I take into consideration the humidity level and winds. Low humidity and high winds can suck the moisture out of new divisions. With me, these 2 factors take precedence over the cold factor. I do tropical bamboo divisions in the Winter, but I am always on the lookout for the cold fronts coming through bringing dry winds. If your new divisions have a lot of leaves on them, you might want to consider reducing the number of leaves. Of course, plenty of water for your new divisions are a must.

RE: B. tuldoides, when to divide
ok, I think I'll go ahead with my divisioning.
The clump has about 15 culms, 1 or 2 years old, can't tell which is which.
Can I dig up the entire clump and have one culm per division?

I used to have people tell me that I couldn't divide bamboos into single culmed pots, but that has always been my trademark.
"One bamboo per pot" = "From one, comes many"
Three gal. pots of single culmed bamboos:

There was guy from S. Texas at the Austin Bamboo Festival last August who had several containers of single-culm B. textilis with 1+ inch culms cut down to leave only some lower branches whose leaves were all green and healthy.

Yelp, the 3 gallon pictures are also of B. terxtilis. I use the 2 images to show people, who are not familiar with pot size, the relative difference between a 3 gal. pot and a 1 gal. pot.satx78218 wrote:There was guy from S. Of course, the 3 gal. pot looks closer to the relative size of a gallon milk jug, so that can confuse newbies. My understanding is that the Federal government is in the process of making the nursery trade industry standardize these sizes.

Hi,guys
len,
I also live in san antonio and recently took several divisions of B.multiplex.sadly,only one culm survived the long, hot drive home.
but after topping the others, almost all have new small shoots.
Are you interested in a trade? i am willing to lend a hand or help out
if you need? (WILL WORK FOR BAMBOO)

RE: B. tuldoides, when to divide
I have B. multiplex Alphonse Karr in a 19-gal container that doesn't interest me anymore, plus 4 big containers of Ph. rubromarginata.
We can discussa trade, but I also have a 9 ft tall Mx fan palm to dig out, pull over, and haul home, transplant.
If you want to help with that, I can pay with some bamboo or palms or seeds.

Ufortunately,my specialty (and interest) are only in bamboo.
just thinking about a 9ft. palm makes my back ache!
Good luck and keep us posted on the tuldoides division.
