phyllostachys resistance to the elements

Post by Iowaboo »

What phyllostachys cane tends to be the most resistant to the elements when not treated with preservatives. I know they tend to rot fast when in contact with the soil, but are there certain species that last awhile when they are above soil line?

Lancet, I don't know if this is normal or a long resistence to the elements, but in 2002 Roger Lewis gave me a Viridis piece about 2.75 in diameter and 5 feet or so long. I have used it for a mailbox post. It is plunked directly into the ground - no special treatment of any kind - and I checked it the other day and it still seems solid at ground level. So 4 years now and still going ...

Possibly, would have Roger have already treated it, or no?
Just imagine if can last 4+ years in the ground without treatment, how long it could last above ground as fencing, walls, ect.
Thanks for the info.

Lance,

These guys seem to know a LOT about using bamboo as construction material. My guess is that you know about Mark's site, if not here it is:

I don't think Roger had treated it with anything, he sent it on the trailer with my Aurea & Viridis FS, and it was a freshly cut green stick.

iandad, yes, I've checked out that site before. Thanks for reminding me to check it out again. The picture galleries are quite fun to look at over there.
