Parvifolia

Post by Brian_K »

How is this promising species holding up? When will it become more readily available?

Deer love it, but it did leaf back out where they did not eat the buds so it held up very well to winter as a young plant. Mine is pushing it's second season of in-ground shoots. Year 1 it had only 4 shoots, this year I saw 8-10 before I left home, there may be more now, none were sizing up in any unusual way, they still emerge at a 45 degree angle which is apparently characteristic of this clone that I have.

Mine has two shoots so far. One looks larger than last years shoots and one is smaller. I am surprised at all of the new leaves. There are even new leaves on culms that are tan and look dead. :D

Last year mine was in a pot indoors then I planted it in the greenhouse that blew down last year so it was only protected by a pile of Plexiglas.

Although it does not quite translate smoothly, plug this address into a german to english translator and there is some good info.

Parvifolia in the third year. First year in container, the last 2 years at this place.
Here ( Germany NRW 7b ) Parvifolia is fast growing.
But it is very invasive too. It already takes about 20m?.
Picture from last week.

Nice looking plant. After a slow start mine now has shoots that are twice as tall as last years. At this rate I might have to move it next spring. I wanted to get it sized up in my greenhouse before planting it outside to increase it's chances for survival.

Paste this link into the BabelFish on the home page here or an alternate german to english translator and you can get the gist of the translation.

The more I look at my Parvifolia in comparison to Atrovaginata the more they look very closely related, suttle differences but very similar, it is my understanding that my Virella will be in this club as well but it is too small yet.

These great pictures really show the similarities.
