The American Bamboo Society has just drafted a position paper on the (real or perceived) invasiveness of bamboos. The principal author is Lynn Clark, whom I'm sure all recognize as one of the true authorities on things bamboo. This paper has been screened by the ABS Board of Directors and an attorney and is about to be placed on the ABS web site. It has been published on the Northern CA Chapter site (nccabs.org) and will appear in the April issue of BAMBOO, the ABS Magazine.

The ABS plans to be proactive and send the document to potentially interested parties around the country. A list of those parties, whether they be individuals, organizations or municipalities is being compiled as we speak. It may be relied upon by those who are defending the proper planting of bamboo in urban situations.

Nonetheless, it is still important to appear at meetings whenever cities/counties/states are considering limiting or banning the planting of bamboo. But now you will have an authoritative and reliable bit of ammunition at your disposal.

And for the record, bamboo has never been declared an invasive plant by any state in the Union!

Thank you Bill and David for your info. I think this will help in giving the uneducated (on Bamboo) council in Conn. some knowledge. This is not my state or immediate problem but I feel this an issue that should be addressed because in the end it may end up being our Town/State. I'll drive 2 hours each way for that.
