RE: Got hardy ferns?
Yes my snow has melted back and I went out to look at the withered remains and discovered a leaf that was well covered with spores so I figured I would give it a try.

The peat pellets I'm using now have green areas on them that seem to have a little bit of height to them.

RE: Got hardy ferns?
Just an update on my tree ferns. I potted the pellets up in potting soil and still have them under plastic to keep humidity high. The plants are beginning now to take off.

Golly, NAte. I think you can grow just about ANYTHING from seed.
I'm good for collecting seed and then letting it sit because I have no faith in my abilities in that department.
I wish I still had all those banana seeds that I DID attempt with ZERO success.
I should round up something to send you, before it gets any older.
If I come up with something, I'll pm you to see if your interested.

RE: Got hardy ferns?
My Japanese painted ferns are just begining to put out some small fronds although I had a bit of a problem with them dying back on me after I misted them with tap water. After I did it I read somewhere that misting should be done with sterile distilled water.
Thuja sent me some Dryopteris spores that are coming along nicely and I have 2 others that are just starting to get the green flecks.

My fern fuzz on the peat pellets is putting up tiny stalks.
The Japanese Painted Fern, which supplied the spores, has survived the winter. Yay!

Does breathing in spores hurt one's health?

Re: RE: Got hardy ferns?
I suppose it depends on the spores, some are definitely bad. Though I don't know about Japanese Painted Fern spores.Iowaboo wrote:Does breathing in spores hurt one's health?
Bracken spores are apparently carcinogenic.

RE: Got hardy ferns?
My japanese tassel fern remained evergreen all winter, but my western sword fern did not. It grows in Montana so needless to say I was a bit dissapointed.

So, what is this secret spore extraction process?
I found this fern frond today showing variegation....
Couldn't identify the fern, though its not a boston (perhaps you are familiar with the "Tiger Fern").....
I see little brown dots on the edge of the leaf, but they are certainly not prominent like I've seen in some others. Or, perhaps the spores have already been released?

RE: Got hardy ferns?
How can I be sure there are spores here, Nate?
If I knew that there were, I'd send them too you...
(reality check tells me that I'll never succeed with spores).
I suspect the fern was NOT hardy.
But if you got a consistently variegated one,
that would be SOMETHING.....

RE: Got hardy ferns?
This is what the spores should look like. Each family of ferns may have a different arrangement, location, color, and shape for the spore bearing parts but this should give you an idea of what you are looking for.

RE: Got hardy ferns?
Jeff Mushroomman, here's what the spore cases look like on the fern spores I traded with Nate. The cases, sori, are on the undersides of the leaves. I rubbed the sori between my fingers to release the spores.
