Shrub ID help requested

Post by dependable »

Hi, Here are some pictures of a shrub I have come across and don't know what it is. Basic upright woody shrub habit, has a woody seed pod , sort of bell shaped if I recall,I have seen but have no picture. Thanks for the help.

Has been growing for decades by the side of an older house I sometimes work at.

I'm guessing Carolina Allspice.

Thanks, I think you are right by the looks of it. Funny, in my years as a landscaper, this is the only one I have come across.

I stumbled across one in a nursery 5 or 6 years ago, and bought it. Only time I've ever laid eyes on one before or since. Its one of my favorite garden features, because its quirky, I guess. Not sure why I like the thing so much. Whole area near it when it blooms smells like... pineapples.
