Tropical - palm?

Other plants we have or landscape elements like ponds.

Tropical - palm?

Post by pokenei »

I think this is some kind of palm tree, but those trunks are thin and look like bamboo culms.

They also appear to be clumping and easy to maintain.

Not sure how cold this plant can take. Certainly not zone 5.

Probably Dypsis Lutesensce (sp). Used to be called crysalidocarpus. Common names are butterfly palm or areca palm. Zone 9 but sold as houseplants almost everywhere.

It's called bamboo palm where I lived a few years ago and one can see why.

I think you guys are right with the ID.

I envy those who live in the tropics or sub-tropics. It seems they can grow all sort of cool plants...like this other plant that has banana-like leaves but grows outward in two dimension like a fan - a big fan that is over two to three stories tall.

You can get areca palm in most hair stores. Super popular palm. The travelers palm is a bit harder to find. Usually no trunk. They only get them when they're old. You can order seeds though. Try rare palm seeds

I have both
Chamaedorea seifrizii – 'Bamboo Palm' (common indoor house palm) and
Chamaedorea plumosa – 'Baby Queen Palm' (has fronds like a Queen palm, but with a trunk that looks like a bamboo) growing outside.

The Chamaedorea plumosa is doing very well. The Chamaedorea seifrizii is delicate and suffers when it gets too hot.

Yes, they are clumping and easy to maintain.

The pictures I posted are not of a "bamboo palm"... the "baby Queen palm" (or pigmy Queen palm) is a close cousin of the bamboo palm.
