Anybody ever grow Tamarind Indica?

Other plants we have or landscape elements like ponds.

Thought about it. Even bought some fruit from the organic grocer years ago with planting in mind. But- its not even close to being hardy here in 6b and its a really deep rooted plant if I do recall so- how would you manage it?

Maybe you could try grafting one to a Wisteria and get it to take. Sorry. That suggestion was just a wild hair- not really useful.

Good luck if you go for it. Or have you already?

I have no idea I bought seeds from eBay and so far i have 8 seedlings that are 9 inches and 10 seedlings that are 6 inches and smaller. They are growing quick i had them start in the Jiffy greenhouse. They will probably die here in the winter though.

time_is_evil - I hadn't noticed until today that you are from this area, there are a few of us now in the 'greater' Bloomington area, what species of bamboo are you growing, how long in the ground and how is it doing?

Well, hey. If MORE people started seeds for things that supposedly wouldn't grow in there area we would probably have a lot more hardy "tropicals". Mutations CAN occur. However, we would probably have a lot more sad faces come winter too. :(

If you like tamarind.. get some monkeypod! It looks similar and they grow all over Maui. You can just pick up a bunch of flat brown pods and break 'em open for the bean-like seeds. The flesh is sweet, but apparently only monkeys like to eat them. I left a bunch of seedlings outside over winter but they all died. I only have one seedling left.
