Petasites
Looking big and sprawling this year, in a few weeks I'll hack it back as it turns ugly in summer.

Did you measure the biggest leaves? It's difficult to get a sense of scale. Looks great though!

I did not measure but held my boot up next to one and it was more than 2 boots, I considered holding both up but my feet were in them at the time...probably around 30 inches.

Re: Petasites
They do not do as good here for me, but I like the variegated one. I should look and see if they survived the death drought last year

Re: Petasites
Ooohhh what a great looking plant! May I ask what happens to make it look bad in the summer?
I'm a sucker for the big leaved plants. It would look great here in the temperate rainforest planted with gunnera, skunk cabbage, lady & sword ferns. After some googling it looks like it grows well in the maritime PNW, definitely one to add to my wishlist.
It's looking like a jungle this time of year along my creek & bog.

Re: Petasites
As I recall they start to wither and look sickly, I think turning black and getting ugly. Mine are in heavy sun and never get watered though. I also think that they come back up a bit after I cut them down???

Re: Petasites
A friend of mine recently offered me some of this. Seems to do well in her shade garden. Not sure I want to plant it, it might be too invasive...just kidding.

Re: Petasites
Hi guys. I've been growing this and the variegated one for approximately 5 years and I also love the giant leaves I get from them. I wack the lawn fertilizer to them and mulch them just as they are coming up in mid Feb. for me the reach 6' in height with some leaves almost 3' in diameter. OTOH they have a rhizome root structure and they do run a bit. I'm sure this isn't going to scare any of us bamboo lovers because we are used to this running habit anyway LOL

Re: Petasites
Hard to tell but I will take more pics when I'm home. in the middle of the two Mayeri groves are the big petasites. I agree on the middle summer chop down, way to ratty looking after the lack of rain
