Lotus rhizome
I had a lotus, grown from seed, but I failed to overwinter them.
Now I decided again, so I'm purchasing rhizomes.

Re: Lotus rhizome
Most are hardy here (zone 3 or 4) as long as they are in deep enough water. Im trying them from seed myself...
Good luck!

Kreos
The species N. nucifera can get hammered if they freeze. Have you tried the super hardy form that does well even in cool summer climates - Nelumbo komarovii? It was collected near Vladivostok a few years back and the Goteborg Botanic Garden offered them a few years later. Russian Red may be the same thing.
BTW are you aware you are never supposed to plant them in square pots?

Re: Lotus rhizome
Is that because you kink the rhizomes?

Re: Lotus rhizome
kreos - You obviously have the climate to flower Nelumbo well.
Sorry you lost that komarovii, will you try to get it again?
cp - apparently the rhizomes snap when they hit a 90 degree turn.
Here is one at a friend's a few blocks away. This photo from September, his plant does not look as vigorous as yours. Our cool summers are not to its liking.

1/3 clay 1/3 sand, 1/3 garden soil. That's my potting mix.canadianplant wrote:Very nice!
