Rather late this year the witchhazel Jelena can flower here as early as late December as as late as late February. Decidedly late this year but always welcome in the winter time. The next one to flower is usal;;y Arnol;d Promise, a yellow and all the rest follow in short order. They stay in flower until April so they pay their rent.

Beautiful! I planted one on a previous property and LOVED it, though I don't remember the cultivar now. I've meant to get another for years, but I want to buy one when its in flower and it rarely occurs to me to go to any nurseries this early. lol.

I've also worried I don't have a sunny enough spot, but I do have several of the fall blooming ones growing naturally, so maybe my concerns are invalid.

Anyway, I really enjoyed the picture! Love witchhazels!

Jeff - That 'Jelena' gets a fair bit of sunshine, here they need at least a half day of full sun as we are at lat. 44 and we get a lot of fog. You may get away with a lot less sun and still have them flower heavily.

The autumn flowering one - H. virginiana - is native here as well. It will flower in dense shade but not so heavily. The flowers are so small you have to go looking for them. Fragrance is pleasant though.

Be nice to have a whole collection of them as there are some new German ones - lavenders and all sorts of shades. Google Rarefind Nursery in NJ, they have a dynamite selection and a festival coming up.

Western Skunk Cabbage is blooming. If it didn't smell so bad I'd grow it as an ornamental near the house. It has a tropical look that I like.

Nice big Lysichitons there. By all means get the white one, it's one size down but flowers in March here with the yellow one and sometimes crosses with it.

Here's a shot of both of them flowering very late in 2008, must have been a cold spring.

The white ones are gorgeous! I'm blessed/cursed to have my very own bog full of skunk cabbage, sedges, and lady ferns...oh and a few billion mosquitos. I'd like to add a few gunneras down here too eventually. Make it look like something out of the Jurassic era :D

JWH - I got my white skunks L. camtschatcense from Siskyou Rare Plant Nursery in Oregon, that was quite a long time ago so they may not sell them anymore. The Japanese name is Mizu-basyo (Water-banana).

Here are the native skunk cabbages near me, quite sinister-looking. There is only one plant on my boggy land and I'm hoping it seeds about. A local seed company sells it but I seem to miss the seeds every year. A diifferent genus - Symplocarpus foetidus.

I bet I can beat you in the mosquito department - down where the land is there are 26 species of mosquitoes, May till early December non-stop.

One of the best Paeonias for colourful new shoots - Paeonia tomentosa.

Also the double bloodroot which is awfully late this year.

Pacific Rhododendron (Rhododendron Macrophyllum) is in full bloom. It's a dominant understory shrub/small tree around here. It's also my states flower.

A couple months back I found this rhodie growing in the top of a dead old growth tree trunk. Never seen that before!

I think this a 'Haku Ookan' clematis, but the tag disappeared years ago so I can't say with certainty.
