Another great plant to grow outdoors during the frost-free period is Tibouchina. It has been flowering non-stop since Spring 2011 and getting big. First saw it growing in front of city hall in San Francisco.
Saw another species or selected form on Long Island a few years back with spectacular silver foliage as well.
Not taking chances of this getting frosted. Roots easily.

Re: Tibouchina
What species of Tibouchina is that? Are the flowers really that blue?
Alan.

Re: Tibouchina
Alan - The Tibouchina is the common one, maybe T. urvilleana. Here is another pic which shows the flower closer to true.
The second and third pics are of an unknown species at the Phipps' estate on Long Island, NY. I think my camera was left on fluorescent mode so it doesn't capture the remarkably silver leaves, the flower was very small and not as bright or as showy as the common one.
