Jeff, they are native but rare around here, that clump is twice removed from where I originally had it so they are hardy, transplant easy ( I dug that clump on a COLD Feb day this year, the soil was partially frozen as I recall and planted it that same day), deer love them, they like woodsy loamy soil and the shade of large trees. This one is from a small piece I gave my parents many years ago and they live 90 miles colder than me, we moved them in with us last fall so I went back for the orchid in Feb and moved the clump with no apparent setback at all.
