Potato vine

Post by mantis »

I have a potato vine potato that I need to plant. Should I stick it in the ground whole, or cut it in half or quarters?

Whole. Just stick it in the ground maybe half way.

Those are neat. I have had those for over 18 years. Once you get started, you will have more potatoes that you know what to do with. I like to let them grow up trees... it is just a little harder to get the potatoes.

If you don't pick them, then they will fall if the temps drop close to 35 or so.

My suggestion is to put it in your garbage disposal and start grinding. Once you get those started you will never get rid of them and they are a nuisance plant. I tiny speck of a potato seed and a new plant comes up. Think: Kudzu

I'll have to chime in here and STRENUOUSLY agree with Roy. Here in Fla. they're impossible to get rid of. Go for the disposal...........NOW!

As a land surveyor here in Fla, I also agree with Roy and Mike. I spend many many hours a week with a machette chopping through a ton of that stuff. It may not be as invasive in your area but here it's a major pain. Same with Brazilian pepper trees and castor bean plants too. I'm sure which ever way you plant it, it will grow. They grow very well in garbage bags.
